Muhumed, Smith win USATF national championships at Crazy 8s

KINGSPORT — Ahmed Muhumed didn’t pay attention to the clock. He was pleasantly surprised with his winning time of 22:26 to win the USATF men’s national championship at the Ballad Health Niswonger Children’s Network Crazy 8s Road Race.

Rachel Smith took the women’s title, pulling away to an 18-second win over her nearest competitor. There were 3,279 athletes overall who ran in the Saturday night event.

Muhumed was neck-and-neck for much of the race with Isai Rodriguez. But, Muhumed sprinted away at the end to win by a second over Rodriguez, last year’s Pan American Games gold medalist in the 10,000 meters.
